The Importance of Bible Truth

As Christians we are to carefully seek after and have a passionate
love for God’s truth. Knowledge of God’s Word is the foundation
for the discernment of truth. Knowing truth is vital, as error can
lead to disaster, even a loss of salvation.

God’s truth is a precious and vital commodity that must be handled carefully – not diluted with whimsical beliefs, not bound up in human traditions, not perverted with pseudo-Christian mysticism, not confused with subjective experiences and not sacrificed for a superficial peace – even within the Christian community. The love for truth is a fundamental aspect of genuine spiritual growth. The Bible promises many blessings to those who seek for and obey truth.

Truth divides, confronts, separates, judges, convicts, reproves, rebukes, exhorts and refutes error. Light and darkness cannot harmonize. Between truth and error there is irrepressible conflict. To uphold and defend one is to attack and overthrow the other.

It has been said that there are “Cancerous Problems” in Christianity today regarding “truth”. One is that many Christians are actually ignorant of what the Bible really says. Other Christians make judgments by “experience” rather than by the Word of God. In many Christian circles “seeking truth” is no longer a priority. In fact, in many Christian circles, aberrant teachings are tolerated and the preaching of “doctrine” is scorned – to the point that zeal for truth is no longer “politically correct”. All of these “cancerous problems” were prophesied to come into the church in the last days.

We need to be certain that what we believe is indeed truth, as error can lead away from God to disaster. It is imperative for Bible truth to be known, studied, contemplated and understood – using sanctified reason, sound logic, clear thought and common sense.

Discernment of truth depends not on our intuitive, subjective, personal experiences, but on knowledge of Scripture – the rule against which we must measure all teaching and test all experiences. Out thoughts, ideas, experiences and judgements are validated or invalidated on the basis of how they compare with the Word.

The Bible – the Word of God – makes the claim to indeed be “the truth” (John 17:17; Psalm 119:160).

Christ also claimed to be “the truth” (John 14:6: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”)

The Bible tells us “why” we should “seek” truth:

So “that our love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment” (Philippians 1:9)
So that we may be “transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2)

The Bible even instructs us as to “how” to seek truth:

To “study” the Scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)
To “search the Scriptures daily to find out what is true” (Acts 17:11)
To come together – with God – and apply “reason” to our search for truth (Isaiah 1:18)
To be guided by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13)
To begin our search for truth with the foundation of “fearing God” and “doing His commandments” (Psalm 111:10; Psalm 119; Proverbs 2:1-13)

The Bible promises us many benefits in seeking truth:

“That we may be strong” and that “we may prolong our days” – conditionally tied to “if we love God and keep His commandments” (Deuteronomy 11:1, 8, 9, 26-28)
“That we no longer be children, tossed to and fro about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Christ”, that we “no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind” and that we “put on the new man” (Ephesians 4:7, 11-15, 17-18, 20-24)
“That we can cleanse our way” (Psalm 119:9)
“So we can have an answer for those who reproach us” (Psalm 119:42)
To get “comfort in our affliction” (Psalm 119:50)
To “make us wiser than our enemies (Psalm 119:98)
To “find the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:5).
To be “preserved” and protected (Proverbs 2:7-13)
To enjoy a long and peaceful life (Proverbs 3:2)
To “find favour and high esteem in the sight of God and man” (Proverbs 3:4)
To receive direction from God for our life journey (Proverbs 3:6)
To “bring us honour” (Proverbs 4:8)
To be “sanctified” or “made holy” (John 17:17)
To “be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11,14)
To “walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him and being fruitful in every good work” (Colossians 1:10)
“To exhort and convict those who contradict” (Titus 1:9)
To protect us against deceptive teachings (Colossians 2:4,6-8)
“To make us wise” and to make us “complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17)

The Bible tells us what our response to truth should be:

To “test all things”, to “hold fast” and to “abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21,22)
To “choose” to “serve God in sincerity and in truth” (Joshua 24:14,15)
To “put on the new man” and to be “renewed in knowledge” (Colossians 3:10)
To “meditate on whatever things are true” (Philippians 4:8)
To “not forget God’s law”, to “keep His commands” and to “bind mercy and truth around our necks and write them on the tablets of our hearts” (Proverbs 3:1-6)
We are to “love in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18,19)
We are not to imitate evil, but what is good” (3 John 11)
We are to “fulfill our ministries” (2 Timothy 4:5)
We are to “walk in Christ” (Colossians 2:6)
We are to “abide in the doctrine of Christ” (2 John 9)
We are to “retain His words”, “keep His commandments”, and “take firm hold of instruction” (Proverbs 4:4,13)
We are to continually seek truth and “increase in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10)
We should “speak the truth (to others) in love” (Ephesians 4:15)
We should “no longer walk as the Gentiles walk” (Ephesians 4:17)
“Putting on the whole armour of God”, we should “gird our waist with truth” (Ephesians 6:11,14)

The Bible gives us warnings regarding truth:

Many will think truth is “whatever what is right in their own eyes” (Deuteronomy 12:8; Judges 17:6; Judges 21:25)
We are to beware of those who would “deceive us with persuasive words, cheating us through philosophy and the traditions of men” (Colossians 2:1-8)
We should be aware that many will try to “suppress the truth” (Romans 1:18,25)
We are to beware of “false teachers” who bring “destructive heresies” into the church, “blaspheming truth” (2 Peter 2:1,2)
The false teachings – and “straying concerning the truth” – will “spread like cancer” (2 Timothy 2:15-19)
The time will come when those who think themselves to be Christians “will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires” but “will turn their ears away from truth and to fables” (2 Timothy 4:2-4)

The Bible tells us how to “test” truth:

If what some church or preacher says doesn’t match up to “the law and to the testimony” – to the Word of God – there isn’t any “light” in them to follow (Isaiah 8:20)
If some church or preacher “transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ” we’re not to follow their teaching (2 John 9-11; 1 Timothy 6:1,3-5)
We’re to “be diligent” and “rightly divide (dissect and examine) the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15)

The Bible even links “truth” with “The Great Commission”:

In His Great Commission, Christ commanded that we “teach them to observe all things He commanded” – which would include all the truths of Scripture (Matthew 28:19,20)
Paul continues this emphasis, saying “all Scripture is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Timothy 4:6)
Paul mandates us to preach truth and correct error – to “preach the word!” – to “be ready in season and out of season” and to “convince, rebuke and exhort with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2)
Paul mandates us to preach Christ and “warn every man and teach every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” (Colossians 1:28)

There are very practical reasons to “seek” Bible truth:

To enjoy the incredible confidence and peace of mind in being certain what we believe is indeed truth
To help us get clear answers and solutions for life’s greatest questions and problems
To enlighten, empower, motivate and guide us in today’s confusing world
To better understand God’s divine revelation of the origin, history, character, behaviour and salvation of mankind
To strengthen our faith in the Bible as the trustworthy divine rule and foundation for all Christian life and conduct
To be diligent in serving God, following His directive to seek wisdom through the Bible’s doctrine, correction and instruction
To know the will of God through better understanding Scripture – giving added meaning to our life, work and relationships
To have a dependable rule and guide by which to measure our thoughts, ideas, experiences and judgements
To discover the true meaning of biblical prophecies that reveal God’s plans for the future – and to have great confidence in and hope for that future
To guard us against the dangers of believing and following error – as error can lead away from God to disaster
